According to Saudi Energy Minister Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, the nation has set a goal of deploying 48GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030. This ambitious target not only supports Saudi Arabia's energy transition but also injects fresh momentum into the global renewable energy and energy storage markets.
With Saudi Arabia targeting 30% EV penetration in Riyadh by 2030, the demand for charging stations is expected to surge. Current projections indicate that the Kingdom will require between 30,000 to 34,000 charging points to meet anticipated EV growth.
The emission analysis for different hybrid electric vehicle charging systems in the four major cities (4MCs) of Saudi Arabia is detailed in Fig. 11. The analysis indicates significant variations in CO 2 emissions depending on the system configurations employed: Fig. 11. CO 2 emission of different hybrid charging combinations in the 4MCs.
This strategy should include accelerated development of charging infrastructure, enhancement of local manufacturing capabilities, adaptation of the country's economic structure, accommodation of social dynamics, and the implementation of dynamic, supportive policies and incentives by the Saudi government .
The proposed hybrid energy system addresses the charge demand of an EVCS in four major cities in Saudi Arabia. It has been assumed that EVCS has been set up in these four sites (i.e. Riyadh, Jeddah, Makah, and Medina). At various time intervals, about 30–40 electric vehicles (EVs) are expected to undergo charging at the EVCSs.
Based on this, the annual energy requirement and peak load are 90 kWh/day and 14.7 kW respectively. For the EVCS in Riyadh, it is assumed that about one-third of the EV users charge at night between 00:00 and 06:00 because of the traffic conditions experienced at the charging station (CS).
