The green base station solution involves base station system architecture, base station form, power saving technologies, and application of green technologies. Using SDR-based architecture and distributed base stations is a different approach to traditional multiband multimode network construction.
These strategies use bidirectional energy flow to reshape the non-uniform energy supplies and energy demands over mobile networks. A joint spectrum and energy sharing method is presented in Guo et al. (2014b) between cellular base stations to minimize the OPEX.
Small cell base stations (SCBSs) will be vastly deployed in 5G mobile networks to cover highly populated areas depending upon their coverage area and transmitting power.
According to the mobile telephone network (MTN), which is a multinational mobile telecommunications company, report (Walker, 2020), the dense layer of small cell and more antennas requirements will cause energy costs to grow because of up to twice or more power consumption of a 5G base station than the power of a 4G base station.
The conceptual paradigm of mobile communication systems was originally proposed by Bell Labs in 1979 (Mac Donald, 1979). Since then, the mobile communication systems have experienced four different generations and are currently entering into their very dense, complex, but highly efficient and data-rich 5th generation.
In a wireless communications network, the base station should maintain high-quality coverage. It should also have the potential for upgrade or evolution. As network traffic increases, power consumption increases proportionally to the number of base stations. However, reducing the number of base stations may degrade network quality.
