Summary BESS are key enablers for the implementation of active distribution system functions by providing a range of grid services at the distribution level.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) have been seen as a powerful option due to their ability to provide the network with many essential ancillary services . In the power network, BESS can inject active and reactive power to support the network and deliver fast responsive support for system frequency and voltage .
Distributed energy storage is an essential enabling technology for many solutions. Microgrids, net zero buildings, grid flexibility, and rooftop solar all depend on or are amplified by the use of dispersed storage systems, which facilitate uptake of renewable energy and avert the expansion of coal, oil, and gas electricity generation.
Hence, local battery energy storage system as a possible solution can mitigate these disadvantages, and as a result, it improves the system operation, because battery is charged when the production of the PV is more than consumers' demands and discharged when consumers' demands are above the PV generation.
The deployment of batteries in the distribution networks can provide an array of flexibility services to integrate renewable energy sources (RES) and improve grid operation in general.
One important benefit of battery storage is flexibility regulation, and hence, the battery storage systems provide high flexibility in the distribution operation procedure.
In the “ distributed storage systems, ” it is considered that the batteries can be installed in different buses of the system, and in the “ centralized storage system, ” it is assumed that the batteries are connected to the main bus of the system.
