Northern Lights carbon dioxide transport and storage facilities at Øygarden outside Bergen (Photo: Northern Lights) The Northern Lights CO 2 transport and storage facility, in Øygarden, near Bergen, Norway, was officially opened on 26 September. It is a joint venture between Equinor, Shell and TotalEnergies.
Terje Aasland, Norway's Minister of Energy, commented: “With Longship, Europe's first full-scale value chain for CO2 management will be in operation in 2025. It is inspiring to now see the results from Norway's long-term commitment to CO2 management.
The Energy Park is located in Øygarden, which is an industry-friendly municipality in Vestland county, a 45-minute drive from Bergen city center. It is situated by the main shipping lane with proximity to the traffic hub and industrial clusters at Ågotnes, where Bergen's freight port will also be located.
The project is said to reflect the Norwegian government's ambition to develop a full-scale CCS value chain in Norway, demonstrating the potential of this decarbonization approach. Longship, with captured CO2 from Brevik and Northern Lights' transport and storage, will be operational in 2025.
While disclosing that its Longship project is nearing completion, the Norwegian government highlighted that it intends to continue its investment in the project, thus, it proposed an allocation of 2.1 billion NOK or $197.3 million for this development in the state budget for 2025.
In the first phase, the facility has the capacity to store 1.5 million tons of CO2 per year, while the pipeline from the onshore facility to the reservoir is dimensioned for 5 million tons. Northern Lights plans to increase the capacity to 5 million tons per year through several expansion phases and growing customer demand.
