High-Efficiency Backup Power Supply A backup power supply is an electrical system that provides emergency power to a load when the main power source fails. An appropriate backup power supply provides instantaneous protection from main power interruptions without glitches, by supplying energy which is stored in backup capacitors or batteries.

Battery storage power stations are usually composed of batteries, power conversion systems (inverters), control systems and monitoring equipment. There are a variety of battery types used, including lithium-ion, lead-acid, flow cell batteries, and others, depending on factors such as energy density, cycle life, and cost.

The battery energy storage system (BESS) combines backup and load regula-tion functions, making it a potential alternative to the diesel generator (DG) as the backup power source for data centers.

Because the energy from renewable sources and its associated power load exhibit highly asymmetric temporal and spatial distributions, such systems require considerable upgrades to their energy storage capabilities, which is a challenging task (Mohandes et al., 2021).

During the three time periods of 03:00–08:00, 15:00–17:00, and 21:00–24:00, the loads are supplied by the renewable energy, and the excess renewable energy is stored in the FESPS or/and transferred to the other buses. Table 1. Energy storage power station.
