With standardized IBRs that intend to maximize grid support during low-voltage ride-through while remaining within their rated phase current limits, the SIRP for LL faults can be lower, easing application concerns for distance protection. The inverter control setpoints can also impact SIRP.
Grid-forming (GFM) inverters are anticipated to play an essential role in facilitating the integration of renewable energy in bulk power systems. The fault response of GFM inverters and its impact on traditional protection schemes are ongoing research topics.
Many of these preconditions are challenged in power systems with a high penetration of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and may cause traditional distance relays to misoperate [7 - 9].
During power system faults, inverter-based resources exhibit responses inconsistent with those exhibited by synchronous generation sources. This challenges the reliability of conventional line protection schemes.
