This study presents a detailed characterization of commercial lithium-ion battery cells from two different manufacturers for the use in home-storage systems. Both cell types are large-format prismatic cells with nominal capacities of 180 Ah.
The cell design was first modeled using a physics-based cell model of a lithium-ion battery sub-module with both charge and discharge events and porous positive and negative electrodes. We assume that the copper foil is used as an anode and an aluminum foil is used as a cathode.
This article presents a comparative experimental study of the electrical, structural, and chemical properties of large-format, 180 Ah prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP)/graphite lithium-ion battery cells from two different manufacturers. These cells are particularly used in the field of stationary energy storage such as home-storage systems.
Some are considered safer and are more appropriate for large traction packs (especially LiFePO4 and lithium-titanate) compared to standard (LiCoO2)Li-Ion cells. Li-Ion cells are available in four basic formats: cylindrical(small and large), prismatic, and pouch.
If the cell count is 6 cells or less, there is a fully integrated gauge available – the BQ40Z80. High cell count lithium batteries are attractive due to high energy density but require basic protections at a minimum. More advanced protections may be needed depending on the application.
We have investigated lithium-ion battery cells from two different Chinese manufacturers, Shenzen Sinopoly Battery Co. Ltd. (“Sinopoly”) and China Aviation Lithium Battery Co. Ltd. (“Calb”), with main application in the field of stationary storage.
