The Government of Tajikistan aims to transform itself from a net energy importer to a net energy exporter, on the strength of its potential for hydropower and solar power production. Hydropower is the main source of energy in Tajikistan, followed by imported oil, gas and coal.

In Tajikistan, thermal power plants account for a share of 6.1% (318 MW) in the electricity generation. It should be noted that more than 98% of electricity in Tajikistan is generated by hydropower plants, including 97% from large and medium HPP. The share of thermal power plants is relatively small.

The government is actively seeking support for development of solar power, noting that the country has an average of 300 sunny days per year, with mountain terrain unsuitable for farming allowing space for solar farms. Tajikistan is encouraging the use of electric vehicles, particularly in Dushanbe.
