Although hydrogen fuel cell power generators are established and proven, they are still considered nascent technology in the construction sector and have been met with skepticism. At Hitachi Energy, we recognize this challenge and are taking steps to foster widespread acceptance.
Currently, several options are available to use hydrogen power; for instance, hydrogen combustion gensets have been developed that can be used in temporary, emission-free power applications. Hydrogen can be used to power fuel cells. It converts the chemical energy of the fuel cell into electricity without a combustion process.
Hydrogen powered fuel cell systems are suitable for a range of applications, including powered access, welfare cabins, lighting towers, and standby power. For these zero-emission systems to be viable within the construction sector, they need to be robust, efficient and deliver at least as much productivity as their diesel counterparts.
This would only be sufficient to power a 250kW site for four hours before needing to be hauled away for charging. Hydrogen fuel cell-based power generators are emerging as a viable alternative to diesel gensets in many applications and an enabler of electrification where the power grid is inaccessible.
It may be argued that hydrogen is not at the same level of advancement or maturity as ordinary power sources. Hence, more technological development is required to tackle practical concerns. Moreover, storage and delivery of hydrogen could be a challenging task.
