Batteries are considered to be well-established energy storage technologies that include notable characteristics such as high energy densities and elevated voltages .
In this Review, we describe BESTs being developed for grid-scale energy storage, including high-energy, aqueous, redox flow, high-temperature and gas batteries. Battery technologies support various power system services, including providing grid support services and preventing curtailment.
Although recent deployments of BESS have been dominated by lithium-ion batteries, legacy battery technologies such as lead-acid, flow batteries and high-temperature batteries continue to be used in energy storage.
