5G base stations operate by using multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) antennas to send and receive more data simultaneously compared to previous generations of mobile networks. They are designed to handle the increased data traffic and provide higher speeds by operating in higher frequency bands, such as the millimeter-wave spectrum.
Utilization of Frequency Spectrum: 5g Base Stations Operate in specific Frequency Bands Allocated for 5G Communication. These bands include Sub-6 GHz Frequencies for Broader Coverage and Millimeter-Wave (Mmwave) Frequencies for Higher Data Rates.
5G base stations often employ beamforming techniques to focus the radio waves in specific directions, optimizing coverage and capacity. This is achieved by adjusting the phase and amplitude of the signals transmitted by multiple antennas. 5G operates in a range of frequency bands, including sub-6 GHz (mid-band) and mmWave (millimeter-wave) bands.
5G base stations use millimeter waves that are extremely limited in range. Each 5G base station has a range of between 800–1000 feet, or 0.15–0.19 miles. It makes up for its limited range by surpassing 4G in other key areas: data transfer speeds (bandwidth), latency, and capacity.
5G speeds are more complicated than you think. That's because 5G includes multiple variants. The fastest, most-hyped version of 5G uses "millimeter wave" (mmWave) technology to deliver incredibly fast speeds. When someone says 5G can offer speeds of over 4.0 Gbps in "ideal conditions," they're talking about millimeter wave.
“Mobile communication systems are migrating from 4G to 5G,” explained Sheng-Chi Hsieh, a researcher at ASE, in a recent paper at ECTC. “The new radio (NR) frequency bands are distributed in two defined frequency ranges (FR), which are FR1: 450MHz to 6GHz and FR2: 24.25GHz to 52.6GHz.
