In recent years, North African countries have started to exploit this potential. Between 2010 and 2015, they expanded their installed wind capacity from 857 megawatt (MW) to 1,942 MW, and their installed solar capacity from 74 MW to 382 MW.
Currently, the deployment of solar PV and wind power in Africa is roughly evenly matched, with installed capacities of solar PV at around 8 GW as of 2020–21 12, and wind power at 6.5 GW 13. For solar power, this number is strongly dominated by South Africa and Egypt, which cover around 80% of installed capacity on the continent 12.

Constructed between 2014 and 2016, the power station was commercially commissioned in 2017. The solar component of this power station is complemented by molten salt thermal storage technology, which allows the power station to provide full power for another 5.5 hours, after the sun goes down, thus supplying energy during South African peak hours.
So far, most of the investments are concentrated in Morocco and Egypt. Contrary to the global trend in the period of 2013-2020 which shows private sector financing as the primary source of funding for renewables development, North Africa sees public finance play a far more important role.
With high renewables potential that can be tapped at low costs, and geographical proximity to Europe where demand for renewables-based or green hydrogen is rising, many North African countries have entered into agreements with other countries and private companies to explore pilot projects for green hydrogen production and exportation.
