In little over a decade, Southeast Asia has become one of the world's top exporters of solar power equipment – a success driven significantly by the relocation of Chinese manufacturers to the region. But now, the sector faces considerable challenges as US tariffs cut off their main export market, intensifying pressure on a previously booming trade.
Despite strong ambitions, PV module manufacturing in Southeast Asian is currently under pressure. Operational capacities have been significantly reduced or temporarily halted, primarily due to U.S. import tariffs. Once a strategic workaround for Chinese manufacturers aiming to access Western markets, Southeast Asia now faces growing constraints.
Southeast Asia's solar exports have primarily targeted the US, with more than 80% of the equipment it imported in the first half of 2024 sourced from Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia, according to BloombergNEF. But this successful run is now under threat.
The five major PV markets—Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Singapore—are set to boost Southeast Asia into a major PV market with strong policy push. Vietnam approved the long-discussed Direct Power Purchase Agreement (DPPA) on July 3, 2024, allowing electricity buyers to procure green energy via national or private grids.
Hong Kong-based compliance and quality assurance company Sinovoltaics has published a new report mapping all solar module factories in Southeast Asia. “The Sinovoltaics Supply Chain Map Southeast Asia for Q2 2024 includes several notable changes since our Q1 report,” said analysts at Sinovoltaics in a statement.
InfoLink projects that PV demand in Southeast Asia will reach 4.5-7.4 GW in 2024, with long-term demand likely growing to 9.7-12.9 GW, suggesting that the Southeast Asian PV market will maintain steady growth in the coming years, becoming a key player in the global energy transition.
