The frequency support capability of inverter-interfaced ESS can be achieved by utilizing grid following (GFL) control, i.e., GFL inverter, and grid forming (GFM) control, i.e., GFM inverter. For GFL inverter, phase locked loop (PLL) is usually utilized to obtain the phase angle for grid-connection.
A PIC-based frequency response strategy for grid forming inverter is proposed. PIC strategy can enhance the frequency stability of IMGs under large disturbances. PIC strategy can be implemented in IMGs and complex multi-machine systems.
In contrast, GFM inverter utilizes power synchronization techniques to provide an instantaneous frequency response, i.e., self-synchronize without PLL, which is like the synchronous generator (SG), significantly improving the frequency response of the IMG .
