This work reviewed solar PV potential in Africa for three generational time-scales: present, near future and far future. For the present, the potential of wide scale rooftop solar PV systems was reviewed, particularly in African cities.
From social perspective rooftop solar PV can help maintain well-being by providing continuous clean electricity in line with the United Nations SDG goals (3, 7 and 11). This is particularly useful in sub-Saharan Africa where power cuts are a regular occurrence.
Fig. 12 shows the annual solar PV potential of rooftops and facades with different orientations, as well as the total amount of these potentials in the village. The total solar PV potential (T_R + T_F) is 1.9 GWh, among which the rooftops and façades account for 71.7% (1.4 GWh) and 28.3% (0.5 GWh), respectively.
They account for more than 80% of the rooftop solar PV potential and over 90% of the facade solar PV potential respectively. North-facing rooftops with a slope of 30° in areas around 32° N should be included in future PV potential evaluations. They account for 32.7% of the total rooftop solar PV potential.
